Oscar Announces Retirement from Professional Football at Age 34 Due to Health Condition

Oscar, the accomplished Brazilian midfielder, has reportedly decided to retire from professional football at the age of 34 after being diagnosed with vasovagal syncope, a condition that leads to sudden fainting episodes due to a rapid drop in heart rate and blood pressure.

The issue came to light following his collapse during a training session with São Paulo in November 2025.

Although the condition is generally manageable and not life-threatening under proper medical supervision, it poses substantial risks for a high-level athlete, ultimately prompting his choice to end his playing career.Oscar’s professional journey spanned several notable clubs.

He began his career at São Paulo before moving to Internacional, where he developed his abilities further. In 2012, he transferred to Chelsea in the English Premier League, gaining international acclaim over four and a half seasons with 203 appearances and 38 goals, during which he contributed to winning the Premier League and Europa League titles.

He later joined Shanghai Port in 2017, becoming a central player in the Chinese Super League and helping the team secure the league championship in 2018. In December 2024, he returned to his boyhood club, São Paulo, on a three-year contract.

Throughout his career, Oscar earned 48 caps for the Brazilian national team, scoring 12 goals and playing a key role in the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Upon his return to São Paulo, he made 21 appearances, recording two goals and five assists, though his time was hampered by injuries, including a lumbar fracture, and the eventual diagnosis of his cardiac condition.

An official confirmation of his retirement, along with details of any potential non-playing role at São Paulo, is expected in the near future.Would you like additional information regarding vasovagal syncope or a more detailed overview of Oscar’s career accomplishments?
