The Swedish national football team endured a challenging campaign in the UEFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers, recording no victories across six matches.
They secured two draws and suffered four defeats, finishing at the bottom of their group with only four goals scored and twelve conceded.
Despite this underwhelming performance in the direct qualification phase, Sweden advanced to the play-off stage courtesy of their favourable standing in the UEFA Nations League. In the play-offs, the team demonstrated considerable resilience and determination.
Under the guidance of head coach Graham Potter, Sweden first overcame Ukraine with a convincing 3-1 victory in the semi-final, featuring a hat-trick from forward Viktor Gyökeres.
They then faced Poland in the final on 31 March 2026, prevailing 3-2 in a dramatic encounter played in Stockholm. A late goal by Gyökeres in the 88th or 89th minute proved decisive, securing Sweden’s return to the World Cup finals for the first time since 2018.
This achievement highlights the value of the secondary qualification pathway provided by the Nations League. Sweden will now compete in Group F at the 2026 tournament alongside the Netherlands, Japan, and Tunisia.
The squad’s ability to regroup and succeed under pressure serves as a testament to their character and tactical adaptability in high-stakes competition.
