Nigeria and UK Sign Agreement to Facilitate Return of Irregular Migrants

The governments of Nigeria and the United Kingdom have reached a new bilateral agreement aimed at streamlining the repatriation of individuals who lack legal permission to remain in the UK.

This pact, finalized during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent state visit to Britain, focuses on facilitating the return of those without valid residency rights, including visa overstayers, foreign national offenders, and individuals whose asylum applications have been unsuccessful.

A central element of the arrangement is Nigeria’s acceptance of “UK letters”—alternative identification documents issued by British authorities for people lacking valid passports.

This step eliminates the previous requirement for emergency travel documents from Nigeria, significantly reducing administrative delays in the removal process.

In addition, both nations have committed to enhanced collaboration, including joint operations and intelligence sharing to address criminal networks exploiting visa pathways, as well as measures to verify documents and combat fraudulent practices such as sham marriages or fake job sponsorships.

UK officials have emphasized that the deal strengthens efforts to enforce immigration rules and remove those who violate them, noting that annual returns to Nigeria have nearly doubled recently to around 1,150.

Nigerian authorities have expressed full support for the partnership, describing it as a demonstration of responsible migration management and a potential model for future international agreements on the issue.
