Lionel Messi’s highly anticipated visit to India commenced in Kolkata on December 13, 2025, as part of his multi-city GOAT Tour.

The Argentine football icon arrived at the Vivekananda Yuva Bharati Krirangan (Salt Lake Stadium) for a public appearance, entering the venue shortly before noon.

However, his time on the pitch was limited to approximately 20 minutes, during which he was largely surrounded by a large entourage, restricting visibility for the thousands of attendees who had purchased expensive tickets.

Frustrated spectators, many unable to catch a clear glimpse of the World Cup winner, expressed their anger by throwing bottles, ripping out seats, and vandalising stadium property.

The situation deteriorated rapidly, with crowds breaching barriers, invading the field, and damaging infrastructure, necessitating police intervention to restore calm.

In the aftermath, authorities detained the primary event organiser, Satadru Dutta, citing organisational shortcomings. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee publicly expressed regret over the disruptions, extended apologies to Messi and fans alike, and initiated a formal inquiry into the handling of the event.

Officials have committed to processing full refunds for ticket holders, while the incident has sparked broader discussions on improving planning and security measures for major celebrity sporting appearances in the state.
