Nigeria Reassigns Police from VIP Escorts to Community Security, Turns to NSCDC for Elite Protection

President Bola Tinubu has directed the Nigeria Police Force to withdraw 11,566 officers currently assigned to protect politicians, business leaders, and other high-profile individuals.

Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun confirmed that these personnel will immediately be redeployed to regular policing duties, particularly in areas with inadequate security coverage and elevated crime rates.

The goal is to place more uniformed officers on the streets, shorten emergency response times, and foster closer ties between the police and local communities. With the withdrawal of police escorts, anyone still needing personal armed security has been advised to engage licensed officers from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

The Corps is actively recruiting for its 2025 intake and is accepting applications from Nigerians between 18 and 35 years old for various ranks, from entry-level assistants to superintendent cadres.

Successful applicants can expect monthly salaries ranging from approximately ₦40,000 to ₦150,000, supplemented by standard allowances.

Authorities have framed the policy as a strategic overhaul of the nation’s security architecture, designed to make conventional policing more effective while simultaneously expanding the NSCDC as a credible alternative for private protection services.

The initiative is projected to increase visible police presence nationwide, improve public safety, and generate thousands of new jobs for young Nigerians within the civil defence framework.
