Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi was named the 2025 CAF Men’s Player of the Year at a ceremony in Rabat on Wednesday, outshining Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen and Egypt’s Mohamed Salah. The 27‑year‑old right‑back became the first Moroccan to receive the honor since Mustapha Hadji in 1998, marking a notable milestone for his country in African football.
During the past season, Hakimi delivered a series of standout performances for Paris Saint‑Germain, helping the club secure multiple titles including the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, Ligue 1 and the Coupe de France, while also guiding Morocco toward the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. His contributions on the field were highlighted by a blend of defensive solidity and attacking flair, earning him widespread recognition across the continent.
The award also underscored a historic moment for Moroccan football, as compatriot Ghizlane Chebbak was simultaneously honored as the CAF Women’s Player of the Year. Hakimi’s win is the first for a defender since Bwanga Tshimen in 1973, ending a 52‑year gap and signaling a new era for Moroccan talent on the continental stage.
