Residents of Zaki Biam in Ukum Local Government Area, Benue State, are living in a climate of heightened fear as criminal activity escalates. The community is experiencing a surge in kidnapping threats, motorcycle theft, and alleged cult‑related operations, with unknown callers demanding money and warning of abduction.
A suspected cult group reportedly meets at a shop near the former State Security Service office along the Yam Market bypass, both day and night, adding to local suspicion.
Motorcycle theft has risen sharply, with thieves targeting riders after dark, restricting movement and increasing tension because motorcycles are essential for transport and livelihood.
A particularly alarming incident involved a point‑of‑sale operator who was forced to pay ₦100,000 after receiving a threat that he would be kidnapped if he refused, exemplifying the daily dread experienced by many residents.
In response, residents are urgently appealing to government authorities and security agencies for immediate assistance, urging the police and other relevant bodies to intervene to protect lives and property.
Attempts to contact the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, were unsuccessful at the time of reporting, underscoring the community’s desperate need for a swift and effective security response.
