Move Away From Protest, Engage in Negotiations and Dialogues – Minister of Youth Development

On Thursday, Nigeria’s Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, called on young people to move away from street protests and instead engage in constructive dialogue and negotiation. Speaking at an event, he emphasized that while grievances are understandable, productive conversation can better advance the interests of the youth.

Olawande argued that street demonstrations often attract security risks, disrupt daily life and may be exploited by extremist elements, whereas negotiation opens avenues for concrete policy changes.

He urged youths to channel their energy into structured forums where they can present ideas, collaborate with government, and shape programs that address unemployment, education and skill development.

The minister highlighted existing initiatives his ministry is launching, such as entrepreneurship grants, digital‑skill hubs and partnerships with private sector employers, and he invited young Nigerians to become active participants in those schemes.

He also warned that persistent unrest could undermine the very reforms they seek, making dialogue a more sustainable path.

Olawande’s appeal comes amid a wave of recent protests over economic hardship and governance issues. He concluded by encouraging youth leaders to organize summits, round‑tables and policy dialogues, stressing that talking, not marching, can build the future we all want.
