Buhari’s Stance on Boko Haram: Setting the Record Straight – Garba Shehu

Former Special Assistant to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, Garba Shehu, has strongly refuted claims that Buhari was nominated by Boko Haram as a mediator in peace talks with the Federal Government. This denial comes in response to former President Goodluck Jonathan’s recent revelation, which Shehu describes as misleading and an attempt to rewrite history.

Shehu emphasized that Buhari’s stance against Boko Haram is well-documented, and the late president had consistently opposed the terrorist group’s ideologies.

In fact, Boko Haram’s leader, Abubakar Shekau, had denounced and threatened Buhari due to their opposing views. This animosity is further underscored by a 2014 incident where Buhari narrowly escaped a Boko Haram bomb attack in Kaduna, which left some of his aides injured.

Shehu also pointed out that Buhari himself had denied knowledge of any such nomination when the issue surfaced in 2011. According to Shehu, the controversy surrounding Buhari’s alleged nomination by Boko Haram appears to have originated from a claim made by a Boko Haram faction, which was swiftly disowned by Shekau’s loyalists.

This raises questions about the motivations behind Jonathan’s recent claims.

In light of Jonathan’s potential 2027 presidential run, Shehu urged him to come up with a better narrative rather than relying on what he considers to be false claims. As the public seeks clarity on this matter, it is essential to prioritize truth and transparency in public discourse.
