The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has secured the conviction and sentencing of 17 Chinese nationals for cyber-terrorism and internet fraud. The convicts were sentenced to one year imprisonment each, starting from the date of their arrest on December 10, 2024, and fined N1 million each.
The court also ordered the forfeiture of their mobile phones, computers, laptops, and routers to the Federal Government of Nigeria. The convicts were among a syndicate of 792 alleged cryptocurrency investment and romance fraud suspects arrested in Lagos during a sting operation tagged “Eagle Flush Operation” conducted by EFCC operatives.
They were arraigned on separate one-count charges of cyber-terrorism and internet fraud in February 2025. The convicts initially pleaded not guilty but later changed their plea to guilty, leading to their conviction and sentencing.
The EFCC had charged the convicts with causing access to computer systems used for destabilizing and destroying Nigeria’s economy and social structure.
The court’s judgment also directed the Comptroller General of Immigration to ensure the convicts are repatriated to their country of origin within seven days. This development highlights the EFCC’s efforts to combat cybercrime and internet fraud in Nigeria.
The agency’s success in securing convictions against the Chinese nationals demonstrates its commitment to protecting the country’s economy and citizens from cyber threats.
The court’s decision serves as a deterrent to individuals involved in cybercrime and internet fraud, emphasizing the consequences of engaging in such activities in Nigeria. The EFCC’s continued efforts to crack down on cybercrime will help to safeguard the country’s digital landscape and protect its citizens from online threats.
