Police Officers Involved in Abduction and Extortion of Nigerian

Four police inspectors in Nigeria have been accused of abducting and extorting N151.5 million from a Nigerian diaspora, Segun Okubajo.

According to a petition to the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, the officers allegedly invaded Okubajo’s apartment, seized his phones, and took him to Abuja, where they demanded N1 billion but settled for N151.5 million.

The petition, written by Prof. Yemi Oke, SAN, on behalf of Okubajo’s father, claims that the officers, AP Mohammed Yusuf, AP Ojochenemi Jubrin, AP Rizama Reuben, and AP Isokpuwu John, were aided by two police informants, Oladipo Ibrahim and Shedrach Luka, who specialize in targeting foreign-based Nigerians for extortion.

The family allegedly raised the N151.5 million through loans and contributions from friends and cooperative societies to save Okubajo’s life. After the extortion, Okubajo fled abroad and has since faced continued threats to his life and family.

The policemen claimed that half of the money went to a retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Sylvester Abiodun Alabi. The petition demands a full investigation, immediate refund of the extorted sum, and disciplinary action against the officers involved.

The family warns that if the IGP’s office fails to act within 14 days, they will escalate the case to local and international media and take legal action.

The incident highlights the need for police reform and accountability in Nigeria. The case also raises concerns about the safety and security of Nigerians living abroad who visit their home country.
