Court Arraigns Man For Misappropriation of Land Document in Borno

Alhaji Abba Umar was arraigned before Justice Aisha Kumaliya of the Borno State High Court in Maiduguri for allegedly misappropriating land documents valued at ₦1.6 million. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) accused Umar of dishonestly inducing Modu Goni Sheriff to part with a property document, which he later sold to a third party without the owner’s consent.

According to the EFCC, Umar allegedly obtained the title document of a 450-square-meter plot of land in Maiduguri’s Abbaganaram Housing Estate from Modu Goni Sheriff in March 2022. He then sold the land to another individual for ₦1.6 million, but failed to deliver the proceeds or the land to the rightful owner. This action led to the charge of criminal misappropriation against him.

Umar was charged with an offense contrary to Section 320 (a) and punishable under Section 322 of the Penal Code Cap 102 Laws of Borno State. When arraigned, Umar pleaded not guilty to the charge. The court subsequently adjourned the matter to June 4, 2025, for the commencement of the trial.

The court also ordered Umar’s remand at the Maiduguri Correctional Centre pending the trial. This development highlights the EFCC’s commitment to prosecuting cases of land scams and property misappropriation in Nigeria. The EFCC has been actively working to curb such offenses, emphasizing the importance of vigilance in land transactions and due diligence.

The EFCC’s efforts aim to protect citizens’ properties and prevent fraudulent activities in the real estate sector. As the case progresses, it will be crucial for the court to determine the facts and ensure justice is served. The outcome of this case may also serve as a deterrent to others who might engage in similar fraudulent activities.
