IMF Clears Nigeria Name From Debtors list

Nigeria has achieved a significant milestone by clearing its $1.61 billion debt to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as of May 6, 2025. This accomplishment is a testament to the country’s commitment to fiscal discipline and responsible financial management. The debt repayment was made possible through consistent quarterly payments, which reduced the outstanding balance by 87.5% between March 2023 and March 2025.

This progress reflects the government’s efforts to implement economic reforms, such as removing fuel subsidies and improving the foreign exchange market, which have freed up resources for debt servicing.Additionally, enhanced tax enforcement has played a crucial role in boosting revenue, enabling the government to meet its debt obligations.

These reforms demonstrate the administration’s commitment to fiscal responsibility and prudent financial management.Despite this achievement, Nigeria still faces challenges, including inflation, which requires ongoing policy focus. The government must continue to implement measures to address these issues and ensure sustainable economic growth.

As of December 31, 2024, Nigeria’s total public debt stood at N144.67 trillion, according to the Debt Management Office. This includes both external and domestic debts, representing a 48.58% increase from N97.34 trillion in December 2023.

Nigeria’s external debt as of Q3 2024 was approximately $43.03 billion, with key creditors including the World Bank Group ($17.32 billion), African Development Bank ($3.20 billion), Exim Bank of China ($4.97 billion), and Eurobonds ($15.12 billion).

Multilateral loans account for around 50.6% of the total external debt. The clearance of the IMF debt is a positive step, but the overall debt reflects ongoing financial obligations that require careful management. The government must continue to prioritize fiscal discipline and implement policies that promote economic growth and development.
