The Federal Government has allocated ₦10 billion for a solar mini-grid project at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. This project aims to provide uninterrupted power supply to government offices and reduce long-term energy costs.

The move is a response to rising electricity tariffs and unsettled debts with the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), which listed the State House among top government debtors with an outstanding bill of ₦923.87 million. The ₦10 billion allocation is part of the increased budget for the State House Headquarters, which rose from ₦47.11 billion to ₦57.11 billion.

The solar mini-grid project is expected to shield the Villa from power outages and reduce diesel use, ultimately cutting energy costs. This initiative is part of a broader effort to promote clean energy and ensure reliable power supply at the seat of government. However, many Nigerians have expressed frustration and disappointment over the allocation, questioning the government’s priorities.

Some have taken to social media to criticize the move, arguing that the funds could be better utilized to address the country’s struggling national grid and provide reliable electricity to citizens. Others have pointed out the disconnect between the government’s actions and the needs of ordinary citizens, who are grappling with increased energy costs and epileptic power supply.
