NBC Bans Eedris Abdul Kareem new Song “Tell Your Papa”

The Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has officially banned Eedris Abdulkareem’s protest song “Tell Your Papa” from being aired on radio and television stations across Nigeria. The decision, made on April 9, 2025, cites the song’s “objectionable nature” and deems it “inappropriate for broadcast” under Section 3.1.8 of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code.

Reasons Behind the BanThe song’s lyrics are considered inflammatory, directly targeting Seyi Tinubu, the son of President Bola Tinubu. The rapper urges Seyi Tinubu to convey the struggles of everyday Nigerians to his father, criticizing the current administration’s handling of the economy and security issues.

This move is seen as a bold commentary on government shortcomings, echoing Abdulkareem’s past experiences with censorship.

AbdulkareemEedris Abdulkareem is no stranger to controversy, having faced similar issues with his 2004 hit song “Jaga Jaga,” which was also banned for its bold critique of the government. This latest ban has sparked discussions about artistic freedom and the role of music in Nigerian society.

The NBC’s decision has raised questions about the limits of free speech and the power of regulatory bodies in controlling creative content. While some argue that the ban is necessary to maintain public order, others see it as an infringement on artistic expression. As of now, neither Eedris Abdulkareem nor Seyi Tinubu has publicly commented on the ban.
