Hugo Ferreira, a 37-year-old South African man, has pleaded guilty to the heinous crimes of raping and beating his eight-day-old daughter to death. According to court documents, Ferreira was left alone with the baby on June 8, 2023, while the mother, Maureen Brand, went out to sell clothes to buy nappies for the child.
Upon her return, she found the baby seriously injured, having been physically and sexually assaulted.Ferreira’s plea explanation revealed a disturbing sequence of events. He became angry and frustrated when the baby continued to cry while he tried to change her nappy. Ferreira admitted to grabbing the baby hard, hitting her buttocks repeatedly, and pushing her head against a surface.
He acknowledged that his actions were cruel, gruesome, and illegal, and that he continued despite knowing they could lead to the baby’s death.Ferreira will be sentenced next Thursday after both the state and defence concluded their representations in court. The crimes took place in a back room at one of the railway houses at the entrance to Welverdiend, where Ferreira and Brand were staying.
