Another devastating explosion has rocked Rivers State, Nigeria, marking the second pipeline blast in the region within hours. The latest incident occurred at a pipeline manifold in Omwawriwa community, Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni Local Government Area, on Tuesday evening.
This explosion comes on the heels of a similar incident that damaged the Trans Niger Pipeline operated by Shell in Bodo, Gokana Local Government Area, earlier on Tuesday. The frequency of these explosions has raised concerns about the security and stability of Nigeria’s oil infrastructure.
The Rivers State police authorities have arrested two individuals in connection with the pipeline blast. However, the root causes of these explosions, which have resulted in significant damage to the environment and loss of life, remain unclear.
Many Nigerians are expressing frustration and concern over the repeated pipeline explosions, which they believe highlight the country’s over-reliance on oil exports. As one commenter noted, “If the pipelines in Rivers keep going up in flames, na then una go know say Nigeria no get economy, na giant Filling station we be. We just sell fuel and share money”
