LAWMA Staff Members Complains of Meagre Pay Despite Governors Increment

Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) workers have been facing issues with underpayment, with some claiming they were promised a monthly salary of ₦85,000 but instead receive only ₦30,000.

This significant disparity has led to frustration among the workers, who feel they are not being fairly compensated for their services in response to these concerns, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has promised to increase the salary and allowances of LAWMA staff, particularly street sweepers.

The governor acknowledged the dedication of these workers in maintaining a clean and healthy environment in the state. Sanwo-Olu also assured that his administration remains committed to the welfare of waste managers and those ensuring a cleaner city and secure environment.

Despite these assurances, some LAWMA workers have expressed skepticism, citing previous instances of underpayment and unfulfilled promises. In 2020, LAWMA workers dumped their uniforms and demanded payment of three months’ salary owed to them by the Lagos State Government. The workers claimed they had not received their salaries for several months, despite their hard work in keeping the city clean.

Governor Sanwo-Olu has also approved a bonus for LAWMA sweepers, which has been met with mixed reactions. While some have welcomed the move as a positive step, others have criticized it as insufficient, arguing that the bonus does not address the underlying issues of underpayment and job insecurity faced by LAWMA workers.
