Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has been handed a six-month suspension by the Senate, following allegations of sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
The suspension, recommended by the Senate Committee on Ethics and Public Petitions, will see Akpoti-Uduaghan’s salary and security details withdrawn during this period.
The controversy surrounding Akpoti-Uduaghan’s allegations against Akpabio led to her suspension, with the committee stating that she should not be seen anywhere near the National Assembly during her suspension.
This development comes after Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, formally accused Akpabio of misconduct, submitting a petition before the Senate.
Interestingly, the Senate Committee chairman, Senator Neda Imasuen, had earlier stated that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s petition was “dead on arrival”. The suspension has sparked concerns about the handling of sexual harassment allegations within the Senate.
