Prophet Adeleye Akingbaso, a 47-year-old self-proclaimed prophet, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Ekiti High Court for raping a 13-year-old girl . The court found Akingbaso guilty on two counts of rape and coercion, with Justice Blessing Ajileye declaring that the sentence would serve as a deterrent to others who have committed similar crimes.According to the prosecution, Akingbaso committed the offenses in July 2022, in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State.
The victim, whose name has been withheld, testified that Akingbaso, who was a friend of her mother’s, would often sleep at their house. On the night of the incident, Akingbaso woke the girl up, claiming she had bedwet, and then proceeded to rape her The court heard that Akingbaso threatened the girl, saying he would curse her and she would die if she told anyone about the incident. However, the girl managed to escape and report the incident to her mother, who then reported it to the police.
The prosecution called four witnesses and tendered Akingbaso’s statement and the girl’s medical report as evidence.Justice Ajileye sentenced Akingbaso to life imprisonment on the count of rape and three years imprisonment on the count of coercion, with both sentences to run concurrently. This sentence reflects the severity of Akingbaso’s crimes and serves as a warning to others who would commit similar offenses.
