Scrap markets, commonly known as “panteka,” have reopened across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) after a five-week shutdown. The FCT Administration (FCTA) had closed the markets on January 14 due to security concerns, following a meeting led by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike. Several scrap dealers were arrested during the enforcement exercise.
The reopening comes after extensive discussions between market leaders, officials from the Abuja Market Management Limited, and the FCT Police Command. As part of the new regulations, market executives are required to submit their national identity details and provide a guarantor. Additionally, shop owners must pay an extra ₦10,000 monthly fee for security and maintenance services.
The FCTA plans to formalize the scrap market operations, establishing a world-class “pantaker” enterprise hub to engage the informal sector. This hub will provide shared facilities for operators, helping to sanitize the environment and remove them from road corridors.
