FG to Ban Tanker on Nigerian Roads

The Federal Government’s ban on 60,000-litre fuel tankers, set to take effect on March 1st, aims to improve road safety and reduce accidents involving large vehicles. This decision was made in response to the growing number of road accidents involving heavy-duty petroleum tankers, which have resulted in loss of lives, destruction of properties, and economic disruptions.

The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has been working with industry stakeholders to implement measures reducing tanker-related accidents. Additionally, the government plans to introduce stricter loading limits at depots and refineries.

By the fourth quarter of 2025, trucks carrying over 45,000 litres will also face a loading ban. This move aligns with global best practices, as many countries impose strict limits on fuel truck sizes to prevent road hazards.
