In a move aimed at alleviating the burden on citizens, Governor Usman Ahmed Ododo has canceled the requirement for students to present a Tax Clearance Certificate before enrolling in tertiary institutions.
This decision comes after a public outcry, with the administration acknowledging that it will not inflict unnecessary pain on its citizens. The Governor’s decision was made public by Alhaji Sule Enehe, Chairman of the Kogi State Internal Revenue Service, during a press briefing at the Service headquarters.
While the requirement has been canceled, the Governor still urges citizens to pay their taxes and update their tax payment schedules. This move demonstrates the administration’s commitment to balancing its revenue needs with the welfare of its citizens.
The initial policy, which required students to provide their parents’ or guardians’ Tax Clearance Certificate, had been met with criticism from various stakeholders, including rights activists and education experts.
They argued that the policy was discriminatory and would deny many students access to education. The Governor’s decision to cancel the requirement is a welcome relief for students and their families.
