Cocoa prices skyrocketed to unprecedented heights in 2024

It was a thing of Joy for Cocoa farmers with global prices reaching an all-time high of over $12,900 per tonne. This surge was driven by a perfect storm of factors, including reduced production in major producing countries, supply chain disruptions, and escalating logistics costs.

The top cocoa-producing countries, Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana, faced significant production challenges due to unfavorable weather conditions, crop diseases, and aging cocoa trees. This led to a global cocoa supply deficit, with the 2023-2024 season recording a shortfall of 478,000 tonnes.

The impact of the price surge was felt across the chocolate industry, with renowned chocolatiers like Lindt & Sprüngli facing significant challenges in procuring cocoa. Despite these challenges, Lindt & Sprüngli demonstrated resilience in their financial performance, recording a notable increase in sales figures in 2023.

Looking ahead to 2025, analysts anticipate a rise in cocoa production due to improving weather conditions, which is expected to stabilize prices. However, the market may still witness price volatility, and businesses reliant on cocoa will need to remain agile and adapt to changing market dynamics.
