Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has recognized Asari Dokubo as the Amayanabo of Torusarama Piri, Elem Kalabari, in Degema Local Government Area. This recognition is significant, given Asari Dokubo’s influential status as a major political figure of the Ijaw ethnic group in the Niger Delta region
Asari Dokubo, formerly known as Melford Dokubo Goodhead Jr., is a prominent leader who has been involved in the struggle for resource control and self-determination in the Niger Delta. He was the president of the Ijaw Youth Council and founded the Niger Delta People’s Volunteer Force, which was one of the most prominent armed groups operating in the Niger Delta region.
Governor Fubara’s recognition of Asari Dokubo as the Amayanabo of Torusarama Piri, Elem Kalabari, may be seen as a move to foster peace and stability in the region. Fubara has been preaching peace and unity in Rivers State, as evident in his speech at the burial ceremony of the late King of Kalabari Kingdom, Professor Theophilus J.T Princewill Amachree XI.
