Indian Prime Minister Visits Nigeria

Nigeria and India are strengthening their strategic partnership to boost economic and security ties. Following Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit to Nigeria, President Bola Tinubu and Modi issued a joint statement outlining their commitment to deepen relations in key areas, including economic development, defense, healthcare, and food security. The leaders directed their officials to finalize pending bilateral trade agreements, including the Economic Cooperation Agreement, Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement, and Bilateral Investment Treaty.

These agreements aim to enhance trade and investment between the two nations. Indian investors have pledged over $14 billion in investments across critical sectors of the Nigerian economy, focusing on industrialization, energy, telecommunications, and defense. The joint statement also highlighted India’s readiness to support Nigeria’s defense modernization efforts and its emergence as a trusted defense manufacturer. Nigeria appreciated the contributions of over 200 Indian companies operating in the country, generating substantial employment and investment opportunities.

The partnership extends beyond trade and defense. Modi and Tinubu agreed to collaborate on counterterrorism, maritime security, and intelligence sharing to combat growing threats in the Gulf of Guinea and Indian Ocean. They also discussed broader cooperation on food security, agriculture, health, education, and cultural exchanges. India reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Nigeria’s development priorities through concessional lines of credit and technical expertise. With India as Nigeria’s largest trading partner, this strengthened partnership is set to bolster economic growth and regional security.
