Varsity workers under the Joint Action Committee of NASU and SSANU have suspended their strike for a month after receiving 25% of their withheld salaries from the Federal Government. The strike began on October 28, 2024, due to the government’s failure to pay four months’ worth of salaries.Abdussobur Salaam, Vice-President of SSANU, expressed that the payment of one month’s salary is insufficient, covering only 25% of the total amount owed.
The union seeks full payment of withheld salaries and implementation of previous agreements.Key demands include full payment of four months’ worth of salaries owed to NASU and SSANU members. Additionally, the union seeks renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/NAAT Agreement and payment of arrears of minimum wage to omitted NAAT members. The strike suspension is a temporary reprieve, as the union awaits further government action to address outstanding demands.
