Man Dies in Lagos During move to a Evade arrest

A man reportedly jumped into a canal in Lagos State and died while trying to evade arrest in the Ipaja area. According to the Lagos State Police Command’s spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the incident occurred on Wednesday around 10:00 a.m. in the Mosan Okunola area.

In a post on his verified X account, Hundeyin clarified that the man was not chased by police into the canal, as some reports suggested. He explained that officers visited the scene and spoke with eyewitnesses who provided statements about what happened.

The young man was a passenger on a motorcycle riding against traffic. When he spotted the police vehicle, the motorcycle rider made a sudden u-turn, prompting the passenger to jump off, run across the road, and through a nearby garage. Witnesses at the garage saw him running toward the canal while frantically emptying his pockets and warned him about the canal ahead. Despite their warnings, he jumped in.

Hundeyin mentioned that the police officers were taken aback by his actions and stopped their vehicle to head toward the canal, where bystanders informed them that the young man had jumped in.
