The Ogun State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker, has made a heartfelt appeal to all stakeholders in the community to lend their support for the 2024 Integrated Measles Vaccination Campaign, which officially kicks off today. This campaign is vital for safeguarding the health of children throughout the state, and Dr. Coker believes that collective action is essential to its success.
During the launch of the vaccination campaign held on Friday at the Siun community in the Obafemi/Owode Local Government area, Dr. Coker emphasized the pivotal role that this initiative plays in the broader context of public health efforts in Ogun State. He stressed that this vaccination drive is not just a routine health measure but a significant opportunity to protect the most vulnerable members of the population—our children.
In his remarks, Dr. Coker highlighted the critical importance of vaccination in preventing outbreaks of highly contagious diseases such as measles, which can have serious health implications for children. “This vaccination not only protects individual children but also helps shield entire communities from the threat of outbreaks,” he stated. “It is essential for parents, guardians, and caregivers to take advantage of this vital public health service by ensuring that their children receive the measles vaccine.”
Dr. Coker pointed out that the role of parents and guardians is crucial in achieving the campaign’s overarching goal of eradicating measles and securing a healthier future for the next generation. He reassured the community that the vaccination is free, safe, and effective, urging everyone to participate actively in this life-saving initiative.
The Commissioner also provided details about the scale of this year’s campaign, which aims to vaccinate approximately 1,136,953 children aged 9 months to 59 months across all 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Ogun State. This extensive effort will take place from October 19 to 25, 2024, and Dr. Coker called on traditional rulers, religious leaders, health workers, and community members to collaborate in reaching out to families and encouraging them to get their children vaccinated.
By working together, Dr. Coker believes that the community can make a significant impact in protecting the health of its children and preventing the resurgence of measles. He closed his remarks with a strong call to action, urging everyone to prioritize vaccination during this critical campaign period. “Let us come together to ensure that every child is vaccinated and protected against this preventable disease,” he concluded.
