Nigerian Podcaster Files N50bn Lawsuit Against Telcos and DStv Over Consumer Rights Issues

A Nigerian podcaster has dragged some of the country’s biggest telecom companies and DStv to court, seeking N50 billion in damages over alleged violations of consumer rights. The suit centers on two major complaints: the expiration of mobile data and the structure of paid TV subscriptions.

The podcaster argues that these practices shortchange subscribers and do not reflect fair consumer protection standards.According to court documents, the claim challenges how data bundles expire even when unused, and how DStv subscription packages are billed and renewed. He contends that customers pay for services but often lose access without adequate value or notice.

The case is being positioned as a test of how far regulators and service providers can go in setting terms that consumers say are unfair. It also seeks to push for more transparent policies that put subscribers first.Legal experts say the lawsuit could spark wider conversations about digital consumer rights in Nigeria. If it proceeds, it may force telcos and pay-TV operators to review expiry timelines, billing models, and how they communicate changes to customers.
