A 19-year-old, Chibuike Friday, has died after being hit by a vehicle at the main entrance of Imo State University in Owerri.
The Imo State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement released on Monday by the command’s spokesperson, Henry Okoye. According to the police, the fatal crash occurred when a driver engaged in a speed contest with another motorist.
Okoye stated that the suspect lost control during the alleged race and rammed into Friday as he was attempting to cross the road at the university’s front gate. The impact left the teenager fatally injured.Police operatives have since launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
The vehicle involved has been impounded, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend all parties connected to the reckless driving.The command condemned the act and urged motorists in the state to desist from dangerous driving and street racing. Authorities said the suspect will be charged to court once investigations are concluded.
