Nigerian onion traders have raised concerns over the seizure of several trucks transporting onions from Nigeria into Ghana.
According to the sellers, multiple trucks conveying fresh produce were intercepted and held at the border, disrupting the movement of goods and threatening supply chains. They said the development has left drivers stranded and perishable goods at risk of spoilage.
The traders claim the incident is already affecting market prices and livelihoods on both sides. Onion dealers in northern Nigeria who depend on Ghana as a key export route said delays and losses could force many out of business if the trucks are not released soon. They are calling on Nigerian and Ghanaian authorities to intervene urgently to resolve the matter.
The sellers also urged relevant trade and diplomatic bodies to ensure free movement of agricultural goods in line with regional trade agreements. As of press time, there has been no official statement from Ghanaian authorities on the reason for the seizure. Stakeholders say they are waiting for clarity to avoid further disruption to cross-border food trade.
