Sheikh Gumi Calls for Senate Investigation into Nigerian Air Force Airstrike, Demanding Accountability Over Civilian Casualties

Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, a prominent Islamic cleric, has urged the Nigerian Senate to launch a thorough investigation into the recent airstrike conducted by the Nigerian Air Force.

The incident, which reportedly occurred at a weekly market in Jilli village along the Borno-Yobe border, resulted in significant civilian casualties.

Gumi emphasized that expressions of sympathy alone are insufficient and called for full accountability regarding the circumstances that led to the loss of innocent lives.

The cleric questioned the identity of those responsible for authorizing and executing the operation, highlighting a pattern of similar incidents in various locations, including Tudun Biri, Nasarawa, and Sokoto.

He argued that combating terrorism must not involve actions that harm civilians, describing such events as unacceptable errors that require transparent examination.

Gumi stressed the need for an immediate Senate hearing to address these repeated occurrences and prevent future tragedies.

In his remarks, Sheikh Gumi maintained that addressing the root causes of insecurity demands precision and oversight, rather than reliance on condolences.

He advocated for greater professionalism in military operations to ensure the protection of non-combatants while pursuing legitimate security objectives.

This call underscores the importance of institutional mechanisms in upholding justice and public trust in counterinsurgency efforts.
