The Benin Traditional Council has strongly criticized the unapproved entry of social media personality Habeeb Hamzat Adelaja, better known as Peller, into the Oba of Benin’s palace on March 6, 2026.
Describing the incident as a grave violation of established protocols and an affront to the sanctity of the royal institution, the council emphasized that the palace serves as a revered cultural and spiritual center, not a site for informal visits or content creation.
Peller, who was on a nationwide tour, accessed the premises without the necessary permissions, leading to disruptions and significant embarrassment within the palace grounds.
In response to the breach, the council has implemented swift disciplinary actions against those involved in facilitating the unauthorized access.
A senior chief implicated in the matter has received an indefinite suspension, while a palace staff member has been apprehended by the Nigeria Police Force, charged with offenses related to aiding the violation and disturbing public order.
Additionally, a queen of the palace who featured in the episode is now subject to formal disciplinary proceedings under Benin customs, with the possibility of expulsion from the royal household if found culpable.
The council has formally invited Peller to appear before a panel of chiefs to provide an explanation for his conduct, though he has not yet responded to the summons.
Authorities have reiterated the demand for his prompt appearance, accompanied by a formal written apology, and have cautioned that failure to comply could result in further legal consequences.
The statement underscores the council’s unwavering commitment to preserving the dignity and traditions of the Benin monarchy, ensuring that such sacred spaces remain protected from unauthorized intrusions.
