Ekpa’s Arrest Not the Solution, Igbo Elders blows hot

The recent arrest of Simon Ekpa, a key figure in the separatist movement in Nigeria’s South-East region, has elicited mixed reactions. While some individuals, including Mr. Kingsley Okanume, a businessman in Awka, and Catholic Bishop of Nnewi Diocese, Rt. Rev. Jonas Benson Okoye, have expressed relief and happiness over the arrest, others argue that it may not be the solution to the security threats in the region.

In fact, some believe that the arrest could even exacerbate the situation, leading to more radical elements taking over. A more effective approach to reducing insecurity in the South-East may involve addressing the root causes of the conflict. This could include releasing Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), and bringing Simon Ekpa back to Nigeria to face prosecution for his alleged role in masterminding killings in the region.

Ultimately, finding a lasting solution to the insecurity in the South-East will require a nuanced approach that takes into account the complexities of the situation. This may involve a combination of political, economic, and social measures to address the underlying grievances and tensions that are driving the conflict. By taking a comprehensive and inclusive approach, it may be possible to reduce insecurity and promote peace and stability in the region.
