On November 4, 2025, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke officially tendered his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
In a letter addressed to the ward chairman of Ward 2, Ede North Local Government Area and made public on Monday, the governor cited the prolonged leadership crisis at the national level as the primary reason for his immediate exit from the party.
Adeleke acknowledged the PDP’s role in his political journey, noting that the platform had enabled him to serve as Senator for Osun West and subsequently as governor of the state.
However, he stated that the continuing instability and divisions within the national executive had made it impossible for him to remain a member while upholding his principles and effectively serving the people of Osun State.
The development has thrown the PDP’s preparations for the 2026 Osun governorship election into disarray. State party chairman Sunday Bisi confirmed that the governorship primary earlier scheduled for Tuesday has been suspended, following the governor’s decision to withdraw from the race.
Adeleke’s exit marks yet another significant defection from the PDP this year, further highlighting the deepening internal challenges confronting Nigeria’s main opposition party. As of now, the governor has not revealed his next political move.
