Iran’s Ministry of Industry, Mines and Trade has confirmed the discovery of a new gold vein at the privately owned Shadan mine in South Khorasan Province.
This confirmation significantly upgrades the mine’s proven reserves, marking a major development for the country’s mining sector. The newly identified deposit contains about 7.9 million tonnes of oxide‑type ore and roughly 53 million tonnes of sulfide ore.
While oxide ore can be processed more simply and at lower cost, the sulfide component, though more technically demanding, adds substantial long‑term value to the project.Iran’s central bank has been a prominent purchaser of gold in recent years, and officials argue that the added reserves will help stabilise the economy amid ongoing sanctions and a weakening rial.
Gold is increasingly viewed as a safeguard against inflation, especially as the informal exchange rate hovers around 1.17 million rials to the US dollar. The Shadan find is part of a broader government effort to expand the nation’s mining industry, which currently includes 15 gold mines.
Although the Zarshouran mine in the northwest remains the largest, the expanded Shadan operation is now regarded as one of Iran’s most strategic gold assets, offering both economic opportunity and a hedge against external pressures. If you need any further adjustments or a different format, just let me know!
