On 22 November, parents arrived at the Federal Government Girls’ College (FGGC) Bwari in Abuja to take their daughters home after the federal authorities ordered the temporary closure of 47 Federal Unity Colleges.
The shutdown, implemented as a precautionary step in response to heightened security threats, was announced in a statement signed by the school’s acting Public Relations Officer, Ali Ibrahim, who confirmed that the institution would remain closed until further notice.
In the early hours of Saturday, families were seen loading luggage onto vehicles while students, some clutching their belongings, waited on the sidewalk under the supervision of security personnel.
The evacuation proceeded orderly, with staff assisting the crowd and traffic building up at the school’s entrance as anxious relatives gathered to collect their children.
The decision comes amid a recent surge in mass abductions of schoolchildren across the north‑west and north‑central regions of Nigeria, prompting authorities to act pre‑emptively to safeguard educational facilities and their occupants.
