Nigerian MSc Nursing Student Arrested in India Over Alleged ₹45 Lakh Cyber Fraud Scheme

Saifu Mayana Umar, a Nigerian national enrolled in a Master’s programme in Nursing in India, has been apprehended by police in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, on suspicion of orchestrating a sophisticated online fraud network.

.Investigators claim he was instrumental in a deceptive scheme that targeted victims across the country, luring them with promises of exceptionally high returns on purported investments in foreign companies and stock market opportunities.

Financial scrutiny of Umar’s bank accounts uncovered transactions totalling around ₹45 lakh, directly connected to at least 16 separate fraud complaints, the majority of which originated from states in southern India.

A joint operation involving cybercrime units from Telangana and Tamil Nadu, working alongside Meerut police, led to his detention from his hostel residence.

During questioning, Umar reportedly explained that a portion of the funds had been sent by an associate identified as Yusuf and subsequently withdrawn. After initial interrogation, authorities granted Umar release on a formal notice instead of remand.

As part of the continuing investigation, police have confiscated his mobile phones and passport to trace further financial flows and examine any possible cross-border links associated with the alleged racket.
